Useful information for visiting marae
Please see below for some useful information to know when visiting Taumata O Te Ra Marae on Waitiangi Day 2015:
1. Dress - tidy casual. It is preferred that women wear a skirt/dress. Women who perform karanga always wear a skirt/dress.
2. Parking - access to the grassed parking area is through the gateway on Hastings Street, which is opposite King Street. The King Street sign is quite close to the gateway. From the parking area assemble in front of the Waharoa (carved gateway).
3. Protocol - On Waitangi Day George Kereama will come to the Waharoa and give a short briefing on protocol for the powhiri and give a demo of how to hongi.
4. After the formalities on the marae we will learn the history of the marae and the adornments within the meeting house. We will then have morning tea.
5. Koha is a gift given to express appreciation for the care, learning experience and/or service received. A koha will be given on behalf of the community however there will be an opportunity for families to contribute to it.
