Halcombe Community Walkway

Picture
Picture
Following feedback from the community a walkway has been developed connecting Monteith Street to Stanway Road. The 3m wide path is approximately 500m long and incorporates two of the five strategic projects that were recommended in Halcombe's Community Plan.
The area has been planted with trees and shrubs whilst still allowing open site-lines to maintain safety. Planting will continue over the years until the area is properly established - this is a challenge in itself as much of the area use to be a railway yard so only the hardiest of plants survive!
The walkway is to be an area that reflects our vision as a safe, supportive and progressive community. We thank our sponsors and supporters for helping make it a reality. A project like this is a true community effort.
If you would still like to donate to the project - please see details below.

WALKWAY GRAND OPENING - 9th April 2016

After just over 2 years of hard work, the 9th of April saw the officially opening of the Halcombe Community Walkway. The weather was brilliant and the walkway looked a picture. A good crowd enjoyed bouncy castle fun, a sausage sizzle lunch, the famous Fire Brigade obstacle course and the grand finale lolly scramble to end the day.
The walkway was blessed by Richard Bain and then officially opened by Her Worship the Mayor – Margaret Kouvelis. The feedback from both locals and visitors alike has been fabulous and we are so appreciative of those who spent hours at working bees and supported the project in other ways. We especially thank Rangitikei Aggregates, Paul Hughes Contracting, Santoft Round Wood and Darraghs Mitre 10 for their generous contribution to this project. We also thank Vicki Powell, Richard Bain and Paul Hughes for the work that they continue to do keeping the weeds at bay!

Leave-a-legacy
Give a forever-gift to Halcombe's walkway. As part of the planting program we are planting 43 larger native trees (Pohutukawa, Kowhai and Kahekatea). We are offering the community and businesses the opportunity to leave-a-legacy by sponsoring a tree. Each tree will have a mounted plaque placed in front of it with the sponsors name engraved. $100 per tree. Please contact us, call Rachel Lane 328 8594 or send in a sponsorship form.

Walkway Working bees

07/11/15 - Edging and spreading the last of the barley straw
Another fantastic working bee completed. Thanks so much to all who came - it was a great turn out and very hot work!! The remaining trees are in, barley straw spread and edging finished right to the Monteith Street carpark - wahoo!
Many thanks to Paul Hughes and Richard Bain for the "pre-working-bee-work" and thanks also to catering-extraordinaire Barbara Blackwell and other food contributors for once again putting on an amazing spread!
12/09/15 - Barley straw spreading and edging
Two working bees have been held over the last 2 months - one to plant trees (27th July - see below) and the other to spread mulch and do the edging (12th Sept). Thanks to all those who put in the hard yards!
A special thank you to Richard Bain and Paul Hughes for all the digger work and spraying. A huge thank you also to Vicki Powell for the plants she donated - these added to the ones MDC bought for the community. Thanks also to those who provided morning tea for the workers – our working bees are becoming famous for the food! It's awesome to see the wider community getting behind the efforts. We are so close to getting this wonderful project finished and are looking forward to placing the plaques and organising a grand opening – watch this space for a date!
25/07/15 Walkway tree planting
06/06/15 - Barley straw spreading
In early June a huge effort was put in to spread bales of barley straw around the  “flax area” to help prevent the weeds taking over and to provide some much needed mulch for the poor plants to gain some sustenance from! Thank you to the Managh family for donating the barley straw and to Paul Hughes for carting it. Thank you also to Paul for the use of his digger to dig some large holes for the new trees to go in. After an unsuccessful bid to plant trees in the area last winter, this year topsoil/mulch “beds” are being prepared for planting into on the 25th July – so it will be easy digging this time!! If you have been down the walkway lately you will see the wonderful area that Vicki Powell has planted up using plants propagated from her own amazing garden. A massive thank you to Vicki and Andre for all they do in keeping the village looking tidy. Thanks also goes to the Halcombe Playcentre for the wonderful morning tea they provided for the working bee worker bees – it was most appreciated!

28/09/14 - Finishing off the Domain embankment
A huge thanks to the core-working-bee-crew that never fail to turn up to every working bee - you guys are amazing!! A good day of "finishing touches" being done with railway sleepers laid along the embankment edge and post-peelings spread. ...It made a huge difference and it looks AWESOME! A big thanks to Paul Hughes for the tractor power and Santoft Roundwood for donating the post-peelings.
06/09/14 - Planting the trees along the walkway
Sheesh! It was hard digging but the trees are all in! A great amount of heart shown by the team today as it wasn't an easy task!!! Thank you SO much to everyone who came and helped. Thank goodness for Paul Hughes' post-hole borer!!!
30/08/14. Digging the pathway!
Wow, things are really moving along now! What difference a weekend makes...! A HUGE thank you to Richard Bain, Paul Hughes, Colin Hirst and Jeff Lane for their efforts this weekend getting the retaining wall done and the walkway construction underway. Exciting!!! Paul Hughes also worked tirelessly after the weekend spreading the metal and dumping bark ready to go around the embankment plants. Thanks so much guys!
The Railway line fence.
A huge thank you to Stan Karatea (Karatea Fencelines Ltd) for moving the fence he only put up about 18 months ago (!!), thumping in the posts for the new part of the fence and organising all the materials for us. A big thank you also to Jeff Lane, Richard Bain, Richard Dodunski and Paul Hughes for their work in putting the wires and battens on - this is still work in progress :-)

10/05/14. Halcombe Domain Embankment planting working bee.
We had a FANTASTIC turnout for this working bee! A huge thank you to the Halcombe Rugby Club for providing some muscle power. It was definitely a case of many-hands-make-light-work, with the embankment completely planted in just over an hour!
Digger work.
The digger has done a great job of clearing the pampas grass, gorse and other rubbish from the walkway area. We are now waiting on some rain so the big mountains of branches and rubbish can be burnt. Many thanks to George Bartlett. The blank canvas is almost ready for the next stage...

16/03/14. Weed-eating working bee.
Thanks so much to all those who came armed with their weed-eaters and hedge trimmers. Cyclone Lusi held off and many hands made light work with the Domain embankment, BMX mounds and Stanway Road garden being transformed in just over 2 hours. A special thanks to Jeff Lane for mowing the railway land the day before and John Morrisey for clearing out the 2 large macrocarpa trees from Levin Street. See below for progress pictures... It's starting to take shape!
